2024 Šipon / Furmint

White wine

Furmint is one of the  oldest grape of our region and could well be the oldest.. It is quite certain it came to our places hundreds of years ago. Local name – Šipon (“sheepon”) was obtained when French soldiers while occupying these places were tasting it and commenting: “Mhmm, c’est si bon”.

The 2024 Furmint shows a delicate lemon-yellow colour with subtle golden tinges. On the nose it is gentle, discrete, youthful, and fruity. Ripe yellow and red apples appear, joined by a touch of white pepper and a touch of lemon. Despite its reserved aromatic profile, the wine offers fine complexity, especially once it opens up and the temperature rises slightly.

On the palate it is dry, with moderate acidity, lighter body, showing plenty of freshness and vibrancy. The character in the mouth is anything but shy, with clear intensity and charge. The aromatic profile broadens on the palate, revealing pineapple and a subtle spicy note. Clear, defined, diverse – a modern- classic of the Furmint variety.

Appetizers, seafood, cold meats, fatty dishes. Oysters or sushi anyone? An excellent gastronomic, food friendly wine.

  • Furmint: 100%

The winter was mild, and all phenophases started very early. A heavy frost (April 22), rains after flowering and a hailstorm (July 13) decimated the harvest, which was about 30% smaller than on average. High August temperatures greatly accelerated the ripening. The harvest, the earliest in memory, began around August 20 and mostly ended around September 20. The crop is small, the quality is very high, acidity levels are moderate, and the wines show clear varietal characteristics despite the warm vintage
