2017 SAUVIGNON BLANC VAJGEN

2021 Sauvignon Blanc Vajgen

White wine

Grapes for Sauvignon Vajgen are sourced from a steep southerly oriented Vajgen vineyard just few hundred meters from our winery.

After maturing in new and used barrique barrels, it has developed a medium-deep, bright golden-yellow colour. On the nose it is pronounced, still youthful, very complex, and varietal. Elderflower, mint, gooseberry, passion fruit, tomato leaf, as well as butter, a hint of smoke, and pineapple.

Dry, with intense character rich and full-bodied. Acidities are moderate; the character perhaps not as layered as the bouquet suggested, yet it fills the mouth with its presence. A touch of saltiness adds complexity and vibrancy. With a long finish. For those who enjoy rich, intense flavours.

Full body and intense character call for dishes with similar attributes. Main courses with white meat and spicy sauces. Chicken curry. One might well try a smoked trout or even salmon.

  • Sauvignon Blanc: 100 %

Vintage 2021 is third in a row, where harvest times were stretched well into October, which was very much a normality 20-30 years ago. Prolonged ripening was allowed enabling grapes to achieve perfect ripeness while having rather unusual balance with high alcohol and high acidity levels. Varietal characters are often stunningly pure. A top, classic Styrian vintage which produced many “vins de garde”.

18 months in old 3500 l Slavonian oak barrels. Matured on fine lees.

  • Alcohol content: 13,00 % vol.
  • Acidity: 5,87 g/l
  • Residual sugar content: 1,0 g/l
  • Closure type: Cork

Already mature. Drink from 2025-2032.
